Anna Gabuniya explains l-Blend concept

L-Blend transforms wine and wine byproducts into a powdered supplement using patented spray-drying technology. This process preserves the beneficial polyphenols and natural fibers of wine, creating a non-alcoholic, wine-like drink when dissolved in water. The product focuses on improving metabolic and cardiovascular health by reducing glucose peaks, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress. L-Blend supports sustainability by utilizing wine industry byproducts and promoting a circular economy. With plans to scale production and launch in 2025, it seeks collaboration with wineries and supplement companies to reach health-conscious consumers.

Prof. Planinsek, L-Blend CTO interview

Education and scientific career.

I completed my pharmacy studies many years ago, followed by a Ph.D. After that, I became a professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, specializing in pharmaceutical technology. My research primarily focused on developing solid dosage forms, such as tablets and granules.

I’ve always tried to think differently and tackle challenges from new perspectives that others might overlook. I enjoy experimenting and am not afraid to take risks when trying new approaches.

I work well with others and value diverse perspectives. My open-mindedness and willingness to listen make me, I believe, a great team player. I've found that people often find my ideas inspiring and appreciate my collaborative approach.

In addition to being a university professor, where I lecture and mentor students, I’ve always pursued innovation with the aim of protecting intellectual property. As a result, I’ve co-authored several granted patents, which, as a technologist, are mainly focused on drug dosage forms.

Why to dry wine?

Unlike the usual focus of pharmacists on diseases, my latest idea is centered on health. It involves exploring the health benefits of wine while avoiding the negative effects of alcohol consumption. Wine contains many antioxidants, which aligns with my general philosophy, including my approach to eating: No single substance will keep you healthy. If nature has developed a product that contains a mixture of beneficial substances, I believe we should try to take full advantage of it.

What is new about your tech?

Yes, drying wine involves using established technology. However, we had to optimize the formulation with the best excipients available on the market. This was the only way to create dehydrated wine successfully, as pure wine drying results in a sticky, unusable product.

Our research in this project focuses on two main areas:

1. Developing a formulation to produce a powdered, alcohol-free product in the form of granules. These granules dissolve quickly in water, creating a non-alcoholic beverage rich in antioxidants.

2. Developing analytical methods to evaluate and ensure the product's quality, specifically its high and reproducible antioxidant content. These methods allow us to quantify all the health-important substances found in wine.

Is your product really ''Natural''

We’ve tested many excipients, or carriers if you prefer. The one we selected is widely used in the food industry for improving taste and stability. It is described as dietary fiber and is known for its benefits in controlling body weight and improving blood lipid profiles. It also acts as a prebiotic, enhancing intestinal microflora. Since it isn’t absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, it is fully metabolized in the colon. An additional benefit of this excipient is that it reduces postprandial blood glucose levels after starch-based, high-glycemic meals.

What is your product taste?

I believe that people who enjoy wine will also appreciate the taste of our product. However, achieving perfection in replicating wine’s taste might not be entirely possible.

For whom is L-Blend?

Our product is unique in its stability and lightweight design, making it easy to carry anywhere. Unlike wine, which needs to be consumed quickly after opening, our product comes in convenient single-dose servings. It guarantees a high-quality antioxidant content to ensure maximum benefits.

For those aiming to maintain a long and healthy life, I recommend incorporating our product into your daily routine as a pleasant drink, especially with lunch.
